YouTube brings local solar enquiries when you film four kinds of real job on a phone (a site walk-through, a bill before and after, a subsidy explainer and a handover), put a code on every video, and count site surveys per video instead of views. This guide gives you the shot lists, the title and description templates, the tracing method and a 90-day plan to test it.

The reason for the code: a homeowner watches your walk-through, rings the number in the description and your team writes "online" in the register. You never learn which video worked, so you cannot make more of it.

This guide covers YouTube marketing for solar installers: four videos that suit local enquiries, phone shot lists, title and description templates with your phone and WhatsApp contact, a way to trace each enquiry to its video in your CRM, and a 90-day posting plan. YouTube Help pages show no revision date, so we give the day we read each: 31 October 2026. Indian advertising rules come from the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) and the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA). Numbers that are ours are marked illustrative, and we quote no viewer or subscriber benchmarks.

This is general information, not legal advice. Customer testimonial videos and Google reviews are a separate job with their own rules, covered in our guide to video testimonials and Google reviews, so we leave them out here.

Key takeaway

YouTube brings local solar enquiries when you post four kinds of video (a site walk-through, a bill before and after, a subsidy process explainer and a handover) and put a video code on each one so every enquiry can be traced. Film on a phone in two batches a month, give each video an honest title and your phone and WhatsApp contact, and run the Shot-to-Survey Ledger: count site surveys per video, not views. Test it for 90 days.

What YouTube can and cannot do for a local installer

YouTube suits an installer who will film real jobs and answer the same buyer questions again and again. It is a poor fit for an owner who needs leads this month: a video takes hours to make and may be found weeks later, so this is a patient channel next to click-to-WhatsApp ads.

What you can measure is real but narrow. Studio's Reach report shows how viewers found each video (YouTube search, suggested videos, the Shorts feed, external sites) and the search terms they typed (YouTube Help, Understand your YouTube video reach, read 31 Oct 2026). It never says who watched or who enquired, which is why the tracing method later matters.

Our view, not a finding: views from outside your service area cannot book a survey. Judge every video by the enquiries it brings from places you can serve.

Where YouTube helps

  • ✓A long video can show a whole job
  • ✓Studio shows the search terms people use
  • ✓A long-form description can carry your contact block
  • ✓One filming day feeds long videos and Shorts

Where it is hard

  • ✗Slow, with no promise of enquiries by a date
  • ✗Needs steady filming, which busy owners skip
  • ✗Shorts descriptions are not clickable
  • ✗Every price, subsidy and savings line is an advertising claim

Reels and Shorts overlap, and our Instagram lead guide covers Reels: film once, cut for both. For where video sits among your channels, see our digital marketing guide and solar marketing strategy.

The Shot-to-Survey Ledger: five steps from phone to site survey

The Shot-to-Survey Ledger is the frame for this guide. Every video gets a code, every enquiry carries that code into your CRM, and monthly you count the site surveys each video produced. The ledger is the sheet holding those counts. Five steps, run as a loop.

  1. 1

    Film

Shoot real jobs in batches, using the shot lists below. One shoot day can yield all four video types.

  2. 2

    Code

Give each video a short code before you publish, such as W03 for the third walk-through, B for bill, S for subsidy, H for handover.

  3. 3

    Publish

Upload with an honest title, your phone and WhatsApp contact in the description, and the code on screen and in the WhatsApp link.

  4. 4

    Log

When an enquiry arrives, add it as a lead with two labels: the channel (YouTube) and the video code. Write the viewer's own words in the first activity note.

  5. 5

    Count

Monthly, filter leads by label and count enquiries, surveys and orders per video. Keep what produces surveys and redo what does not.

A video's job is to bring a viewer to the Ask gate of the Four-Gate Enquiry Path in our solar website guide: one tap to call or message. The Landed gate, where the enquiry reaches a named person with a follow-up date, is yours.

The four enquiry videos, with phone shot lists

Four videos cover most of what a local buyer asks before calling. Each answers one question and carries one risk.

VideoBuyer question it answersLengthMain risk
1. Site walk-throughIs this installer real, local and tidy?3 to 5 minutesShowing a customer's identity or house
2. Bill before and afterWill my electricity bill actually fall?60 to 90 secondsA savings claim you cannot substantiate
3. Subsidy processHow does the subsidy work and what do I do?4 to 8 minutesA figure or step that goes out of date
4. Customer handoverWhat happens on the day and afterwards?2 to 3 minutesConsent, and customer-endorsement rules

The lengths are our suggestions. YouTube Help says Shorts run up to 3 minutes and can be uploaded as vertical video (Get started creating YouTube Shorts). Ordinary videos longer than 15 minutes need at least intermediate feature access, which means phone verification (Learn about feature access), so every video here stays well under that.

Video 1: the site walk-through

Show one finished job from roof to meter. Say the size, the town or area (never the house number) and the month.

ShotWhat to filmSecondsPhone tip
1. Hook cardText on a board: "4 kW rooftop, Nashik, October" and your business name5Or add text in the editing app
2. ApproachThe building from the street, without the house number or vehicle plates10Hold the phone sideways, walk slowly
3. Roof accessThe safe route up, and the team in harnesses where the job needs them10Film from below
4. PanelsA slow pan across the array, then one nameplate close-up20Wipe the lens, avoid the sun
5. StructureClamps, rails and earthing close-up15Tap to lock focus
6. CablesThe cable run from array to inverter15Hold 3 seconds per part
7. InverterThe unit, wiring and display showing generation20Show the display date
8. MeterThe meter box, no consumer number in frame10Step back
9. You to cameraThe owner or engineer says what was installed, in plain words30Use a clip-on mic, not roof wind
10. Contact cardPhone and WhatsApp number on screen and spoken, plus the video code8Hold for all 8 seconds

Name module and inverter models only if you can prove what you fitted. Our site survey checklist pairs well, since the walk-through shows what your surveyor checks.

Video 2: the bill before and after

This is the strongest hook and the riskiest claim. Film two bills side by side, personal details covered.

  1. Get the customer's yes first, in writing on WhatsApp.
  2. Cover the name, address, consumer number and meter number before filming. Keep month, units and amount visible.
  3. Use the first full bill after commissioning. Show units as well as rupees, since a tariff change can distort rupees alone.
  4. Say what else changed, such as a new air conditioner.
  5. Put a caveat on screen while you speak the claim: "This customer's bills, March and June. Your result depends on use, roof and tariff."

Illustrative caption. "4 kW, Nashik. March bill: 410 units, ₹3,650. June bill: 95 units billed, ₹690." These figures are invented. Use a real customer's bills and add no 25-year promise.

Video 3: the subsidy process explainer

Home buyers ask about the PM Surya Ghar subsidy before they ask about you. Answer in order: who qualifies, how much, what the customer does, what you do, what you cannot promise. Our pitching guide, subsidy slabs post and calculation guide hold the detail.

Quote the money precisely. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) guidelines give central financial assistance to the residential sector: ₹30,000 per kWp for the first 2 kWp and ₹18,000 for the third kWp, so a system of 3 kWp or more gets ₹78,000 at the standard rate, with higher per-kW amounts for special category states. The same document says no assistance goes to commercial and industrial consumers and that state governments may add their own top-up (MNRE guidelines for PM-Surya Ghar, file uploaded July 2025, read 31 Oct 2026).

Then date it. A script line: "Under the MNRE guidelines I read on 31 October 2026, a home system of 3 kW or more gets ₹78,000 from the central government. Your state may add to this. Check the official portal before you decide." Put the same date in the description and replace the video when the rules change. Do not promise when the money will arrive unless you can cite an official timeline.

Shots for this video: you to camera for the hook (15 seconds), a printed or on-screen copy of the MNRE table with its date, a screen recording of each portal step you describe, a worked example for a 3 kW home on a whiteboard, and the contact card.

Video 4: the customer handover

Film the commissioning day: the inverter display showing first generation, the customer being shown how to read it, warranty papers handed over with details blurred, and the number to call if something looks wrong. Our after-sales service guide lists what to hand over.

Offer every customer a hands-only version, with no face or voice. If a customer speaks about their experience, that is a testimonial, which carries extra rules beyond this guide. A discount or gift for appearing is a connection that must be disclosed, as the claims section explains.

Filming on a phone: what matters and a two-batch routine

You do not need a studio. You need steady shots, clear sound and daylight. Viewers forgive a plain picture sooner than a voice lost in wind. These are our habits, not rules.

YouTube advises a consistent, sustainable schedule and filming in batches where possible (Upload schedule tips, read 31 Oct 2026). For a small installer, that means two shoot days a month, not daily filming. Carry a power bank, a clip-on microphone, a small tripod, a lens cloth, a board and marker for hook cards, a printed code list and cover-ups for bills.

For music, use YouTube Studio's Audio Library, which YouTube describes as copyright-safe, and credit the artist where the track requires it (Audio Library help, read 31 Oct 2026). Do not play a film song from a speaker while filming.

Film horizontally for long videos and vertically for Shorts, then cut two or three vertical clips from each long video.

Titles, descriptions and your phone number

A title should say what the video shows, in the words a buyer would type. YouTube says keep it accurate and short, most important words first, within 100 characters (Thumbnail and title tips and Edit video settings, read 31 Oct 2026). Its spam policy bans "malicious clickbait", titles or thumbnails that trick people into clicking a video that does not deliver what was promised (Spam policy, read 31 Oct 2026).

TypeTitle patternExample

HandoverSolar handover day in [town]: what you get and who to callSolar handover day in Nashik: what you get and who to call

Put your number in the description, not the title, which should describe the video. YouTube's description tips say viewers see the first few lines first, each video needs a unique description, and one or two main words should appear in both title and description (Tips for video descriptions, read 31 Oct 2026). A default description can fill basic channel details on every upload.

This template puts the answer and contact first, then chapters.

The WhatsApp link uses WhatsApp's click-to-chat format: the number in full international format with zeroes, brackets and dashes left out, then "?text=" and a URL-encoded message (WhatsApp Help Center, click to chat, no date shown, read 31 Oct 2026). The code in the message ties the chat to the video.

Three YouTube limits shape where the number goes.

  • Shorts: URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable, so show the number and code on screen and say them aloud. A clickable route is the channel profile links, which can hold up to 14 links (Sharing links with your audiences, read 31 Oct 2026).
  • New channels: clickable links in long-form descriptions and chapters are advanced features. Phone verification gives access to intermediate ones such as custom thumbnails, and advanced access comes with channel history or ID or video verification (Learn about feature access, read 31 Oct 2026). Until then the number is plain text, and people can still ring it.
  • Chapters: you need at least three timestamps, the first at 00:00, each at least 10 seconds (Video Chapters, read 31 Oct 2026).

Fast tip. The YouTube policy pages we read do not restrict a phone number in a description. Their scam rules target fake customer-support numbers, so use your real business number, the same as on your Google Business Profile.

A video is an advertisement. The CCPA's misleading-advertisement guidelines (notified 9 June 2022) apply to "all advertisements regardless of form, format or medium" (CCPA notification of 9 June 2022, para 3, read 31 Oct 2026). Our website guide has a longer claims table, so these rows are the ones video adds. Read each as a prompt to check, not as legal advice.

A module or inverter maker supplies free kit or pays you to feature itBranded content under YouTube policy, and an ASCI material connectionTick the paid promotion box and also say it in the videoYouTube Branded Content Policies; ASCI guidelines

On the last two rows: YouTube defines branded content as content influenced by a brand partner in exchange for "something of value", including payment or free products, and asks creators to use the paid promotion declaration in Studio, while the creator stays responsible for a "clear and prominent" disclosure (YouTube Branded Content Policies, read 31 Oct 2026). Your own work on your own channel is not that. A supplier's free stock or a local influencer's discounted install is.

India adds a layer. ASCI's influencer guidelines (for advertisements from 14 June 2021, with later addenda) count discounts, gifts and free products "with or without any conditions attached" as a material connection, warn that disclosures are missed at the end of a video or behind a "more" click, and accept the YouTube "Includes Paid Promotion" tag as a label (ASCI guidelines, read 31 Oct 2026). The Department of Consumer Affairs guide "Endorsement Know-hows!" (20 January 2023) adds that disclosures belong in the video, not just the description, in audio and video, apart from the platform's own tool (Endorsement Know-hows, read 31 Oct 2026).

This is general advice, not legal advice. The goal is simple: nobody is surprised to find themselves on YouTube.

  1. Ask before the shoot, and say where it will appear: a public, searchable YouTube channel, until you remove it.
  2. Say what will be visible: face, voice, house exterior, bills. Offer the hands-only option.
  3. Never show a consumer number, house number, phone number, vehicle plate, Aadhaar or bank detail. Cover them before filming, not in editing.
  4. Avoid children in frame, and set each video's audience. YouTube says a video is not necessarily "made for kids" just because children may incidentally see it, and general-audience content should be set as not made for kids (Determining if your content is made for kids, read 31 Oct 2026).
  5. Agree to remove it on request. YouTube's privacy process starts by asking the uploader and weighs whether a person is identifiable by image, voice or contact details, and consent (Protecting your identity, read 31 Oct 2026).
  6. Ask the society or office before filming common areas.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, announced in a PIB release of 14 November 2025 with an 18-month phased timeline, call for clear consent notices stating the specific purpose (PIB, 14 November 2025, read 31 Oct 2026). Whether a customer video falls under them is a question for your lawyer. A message that states the purpose costs nothing. Save it as a template:

Namaste [name]. We would like to film a short video of your solar plant
for our YouTube channel and WhatsApp status. It will show the roof,
panels and inverter. Your name, house number, electricity consumer number
and face will not be shown unless you say so. You can ask us to remove
it at any time by messaging this number. Reply YES if you agree.

How to trace each enquiry to its video

YouTube cannot tell you who enquired, so you build the link yourself. Use several methods, because each leaks a little. The aim is a good estimate, not perfect attribution. Our lead source attribution guide covers tracking across all your sources.

MethodHow it worksWhat it tells youBlind spot
Code in the WhatsApp linkThe description link opens a chat with "video W03" already typedThe exact video, for people who tap and sendNot clickable in Shorts
Code on screen and spokenEnd card: "WhatsApp 98XXXXXXXX and type W03"The video, for people who type the codeMany forget, or call instead
The first-call questionAsk "Which video or page brought you to us?" and pick from a fixed listA source even for callers, with the viewer's wordsMemory, and a rushed caller
A tagged website linkDescription link to your enquiry page with utm tagsVisits and form fills by video in Google Analytics 4Needs a clickable link and a tracked form
YouTube Studio Reach reportPer-video traffic sources and search termsWhich videos get found, and for which searchesViews only, no enquiry identity

Google's Analytics Help names utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign as the core tag parameters, says values are case sensitive, recommends lowercase naming and warns missing parameters show as "(not set)" (Analytics Help, URL builders, read 31 Oct 2026).

The code, the labels and the note

Keep the code scheme boring: a type letter and a serial, such as W03. Then do three things for every enquiry, in the first minute.

  1. Add the lead with the channel label YouTube and the video label, for example YT-W03.
  2. Write the viewer's own words in the first activity note: "Saw the 4 kW walk-through, asked about net metering."
  3. Set the follow-up date, using the routine in our follow-up cadence guide.

One person who messages and then calls can create two leads, so read the duplicate leads guide, and use the Slot-Lock Ladder to keep the survey slot. Include "Heard on YouTube" in your caller question list, so uncoded influence shows up too. The notes also become your next video list: a question asked three times deserves a video.

The ledger in use

Once a month, filter leads by label and fill one row per video. This illustrative ledger shows the six of twelve videos that drew coded enquiries by day 90. The other six drew none.

CodeVideoMain source in StudioCoded enquiriesSurveysOrdersDecision
W014 kW walk-through, NashikYouTube search321Keep. Film another roof type
B01Bill before and after (Short)Shorts feed100Redo with units shown
S01Subsidy process for homesYouTube search521Keep. Refresh when rules change
H01Handover dayChannel page110Keep, cut a Short
W023 kW walk-through, nearby townSuggested videos310Keep
S02Subsidy: documents neededYouTube search100Merge into S01

Notice what the ledger shows. S01 brought the most enquiries, W01 and S01 each brought an order, and B01 brought one enquiry and no survey. Views alone would hide all of that.

The 90-day posting plan and what it should cost you

Ninety days is long enough to publish a dozen videos and read the ledger twice, and short enough to stop if nothing works. The plan assumes one owner or engineer filming. Shift the weeks to suit your season.

PeriodFilmPublishReview
Before day 1Set up the channel: business name, About text with your number, profile links, default description, phone verification, audience settingTest one unlisted uploadWrite the code sheet and the consent template
Days 1 to 30Shoot days 1 and 2: one video of each type from recent jobs, plus 4 Shorts cut from themOne long video a week, one Short a weekDay 30: log every enquiry with its label
Days 31 to 60Shoot days 3 and 4: a walk-through in another town or roof type, two subsidy answers to real questions, a handoverOne long video a week, one or two ShortsDay 45: first full ledger
Days 61 to 90Shoot days 5 and 6: more of what the ledger favours. Refresh the dated subsidy videoOne long video a week, Shorts from the bestDay 90: continue, change or stop

The pace is ours: YouTube asks only for a sustainable, consistent schedule. If weekly is too much, go fortnightly.

Illustrative. Assume 6 shoot batches of 3 hours (18 hours), plus editing 12 long videos at 1.5 hours (18 hours) and 12 Shorts at 0.5 hours (6 hours): 42 hours of owner time. Assume 2 traced orders at ₹30,000 gross margin each, so ₹60,000, or about ₹1,430 an hour. These figures are invented. Use your own hours and margin, and add any editor's fee.

The day-90 rule is ours, not a benchmark. If traced orders or several surveys exist, continue and double down on the video types that produced them. If enquiries came but no surveys, the videos attract the wrong people (other towns, price hunters), so change titles and add the town and system size. If after a dozen videos nobody has used a code or answered "Heard on YouTube", pause the channel and spend the hours on your Business Profile or referrals. Paid promotion carries the same claims rules, and our Google Ads guide covers paid campaigns.

How Quickest Solar CRM fits

Quickest Solar CRM does not connect to YouTube or collect enquiries from it. Your team adds each enquiry as a lead, which is the Log step. It helps with what follows.

  • Lead Capture: add and edit each enquiry as a lead, put the labels YouTube and YT-W03 on it, and write the viewer's own words in an activity note.
  • Labels and lead filters: filter leads by video label each month to count enquiries, then watch where they sit in your customisable stages for the survey and order counts.
  • Follow-up reminders and saved message templates: set the first follow-up when you create the lead, and keep your consent message and first reply as saved templates.
  • Bulk import from Excel: bring in your old enquiry register so the first ledger has history.

The Free plan on pricing gives one user and 10 proposals a month with no card, enough to run one ledger by yourself.

What to do this week: from first shoot to first coded enquiry

You can have a coded video live in seven days.

  1. Day 1: pick one finished job you can film with the owner's yes, and send the consent message.
  2. Day 2: write your code sheet and create the labels YouTube and YT-W01 in your lead list.
  3. Day 3: film the walk-through from the shot list, plus two vertical clips.
  4. Day 4: edit, write the title and description from the template, and check every claim against the table above.
  5. Day 5: upload as unlisted, tap the WhatsApp link on a phone and see the code arrive. Then make it public.
  6. Days 6 and 7: tell your team the first question on every new call is "Which video or page brought you to us?"

Frequently asked questions

Is YouTube worth it for a small solar installer?

It can be, if you will film real jobs steadily and trace what comes back. It is slow, with no promise of enquiries by a set date. Treat it as a 90-day test costing mainly your hours, count surveys per video, and decide at day 90. If nothing traces back, spend the time on your Business Profile or referrals.

What videos should a solar installer post first?

A site walk-through of a finished job, a bill before and after (with permission), a subsidy process explainer and a handover day. Each answers a question buyers ask before calling.

Can I put my phone number in a YouTube title or description?

Put it in the description and on screen, not the title, which should describe the video accurately. The YouTube policy pages we read do not restrict a phone number in a description, but they do warn against misleading titles. Use your real business number, the same everywhere.

No. YouTube says URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable, to reduce spam and scams. Show your number and code on screen and say them aloud. Channel profile links, up to 14, are a clickable route.

How do I know which video brought an enquiry?

Give each video a code, put it in a prefilled WhatsApp link and on screen, and ask every caller which video brought them. Add the lead with a YouTube label and a video label, then filter by label monthly and count enquiries, surveys and orders. Studio shows views and traffic sources but never who enquired.

Do I need a customer's permission to film their house or bill?

Ask first and keep the yes in writing, for example on WhatsApp. Say where the video will appear, cover names, addresses and consumer numbers, and offer a hands-only version. This is general advice, not legal advice, so ask a lawyer about your case. YouTube also lets people ask for removal of videos that identify them.

Do I have to mark my videos as paid promotion?

Not for your own work on your own channel. You do if a supplier pays you or gives free products to feature them, and a customer who gets a discount or gift and then speaks for you is also a connection to disclose. YouTube asks for the paid promotion declaration, and ASCI and the consumer affairs guide expect disclosure in the video itself.
